Love Song for a Bangkok Neighborhood

An alternative to condo life in Bangkok. To get the latest:

Elegant Teak House

We are offering this rare and beautiful teak house for rent in 2012. It is remodelled inside to fit western needs and tastes. Conveniently located a minute off the popular Sukhumvit Soi Ekamai, this house is a Jim Thompson-style landmark in a fine Thai neighborhood. For a quick view click on the following video:

Shophouses as art

We knew someone would do it, someone who shared our fascination with the Thai shophouse, an architectural style originally from China and said to have been the import inspiration of Thai King Rama V.

So we were happy to see that is exactly what award-winning German photographer Peter Nitsch has done, seek out the most interesting of the thousands of fantastic, kitschy, irrepressibly multitasking Bangkok shophouses and photographed them. Peter has done more than that, as Thai-based author John Burdett explains: “Far from the traffic jams and the go-go bars, Nitsch takes us into the front rooms of the eight million ordinary Thais who are the real Bangkok: busy, chaotic-looking, organized by impenetrable idiosyncrasy, and unashamedly human.”

But is it possible to adapt this style to fit modern western tastes? Of course! That’s what we are all about at villageinthecity.com, as Tony and Greg point out on Bangkok Podcast:
